The internal container is a solid cast lead capsule designed to shield or dampen the gamma rays emitted by the source in order to minimise exposure to personnel tasked with its transport or use. Moreover, the outer hard plastic shell ensures that personnel do not come in direct contact with the lead capsule, lessening the chance of contamination and lead exposure.
These particular lead pigs were originally used to transport and store Sodium Iodide I-123 capsules. I-123 has a very short half life and relatively low energy, therefore requiring minimal shielding.
These lead pigs are ideal for storing low to medium activity uranium ore, radioactive isotopes or other radioactive samples. The plastic shell protects you from physically touching the lead and the internal plastic inserts provide extra distance and the possibility of placing additional shielding between the lead capsule and outer plastic shell.
If you have a particularly spicy sample with a high gamma activity and energy, greater shielding is advisable.
