Energy compensated Geiger-Mueller (GM) probe - beta shield to distinguish beta and gamma radiation. The Model 491-40 has a measuring range of upto 1 R/h, and is fitted with a MHV connector making it possible to use with other detectors. As shown in the photos this also makes it possible to use other probes, such as an alpha capable pancake probe (not included) with this device.

*Generally audio is via the old original headphones but this device is fitted with the accompanying newer speaker (it is very loud and sounds great). (This unit may also be modified and fitted with modern headphones rather than the original types).

Like the Model CDV-700, the 493 is a highly sensitive low-range survey meter that employs a sliding GM detector. According to the Handbook for Radiological Monitors, it “can be used (1) in long term clean-up and decontamination operations, (2) for personnel monitoring, and (3) for indicating the degree of radioactive contamination on food and water”.

Designed to be used in conjunction with other high range variants (CDV-715/717).

The 493 is very reliable and has a very fast response. This particular model has had some high voltage components upgraded and replaced (capacitor and transistors). It is very clean throughout.
